The government has cut off a big portion of the aid promised to a young woman in critical condition after surviving a ninth-floor fall from a building in Male'.
Police believe Hawwa Yumnu, 21, fell from a window in the stairwell of Henveiru Fentenoy house on April 18.
Doctors say she needs to undergo surgeries for multiple fractures in the spine, groin, thighs and ribcage. She is being treated in the ICU of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Her family wanted to evacuate her to Malaysia for treatment as soon as the doctors authorized it. The government told the family on Friday that all expenses would be covered. The flight was scheduled for tonight.
But the government now says all expenses cannot be covered. The family earlier told some well-wishers that they do not need assistance because of the government's promise.
"Since the government has said they will do all this, we have been telling everyone that the government has agreed to cover all the expenses,” the family told Adhadhu.
According to the document provided by Malaysia's Pantai Hospital, Yumnu's initial surgeries alone cost more than USD 57,000 (MVR 878,940). The hospital said she could be admitted when the family pays USD 45,724 (MVR 705,064).
However, when the government deposited the money, the family received only MVR 385,500.
"Because we don't know the full amount, we will give you money for the ticket and to get there and begin treatment. Then they made a transfer of about MVR 300,000. That is USD 25,000 in bank rate," a member of the family said.
The family is now trying to raise the money needed for her treatment. The family said it was their mistake to trust the government's word in the first place.
"This is my problem. It is a big problem with me that I believed what the system said again," the family member said.
