Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has launched commercial seaweed cultivation in the Maldives for the first time.
The project planned in Baa Fehendhoo island by Floating Acres was officially launched on Sunday.
In a post on X, the ministry said the project will facilitate the development of more projects in the mariculture sector.

The ministry said the project will result in new job opportunities for youth and women in Fehendhoo.
The government has described the project as an opportunity to increase export earnings, introduce modern technology and provide opportunities for the people to learn new skills.
According to the government, the project is part of the policy to expand economic activities using marine resources.
