Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) MP Mohamed Abbas has said he does not support cancelling the second round of the presidential election.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu wants to cancel the second round of the presidential election by amending the constitution. On Thursday, he appealed for the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MPs to support his proposal.

In a post on X, the lawmaker for Velidhoo constituency said he will "not support any decision to forgo the second round of the presidential election."

"And I do not support the abolition of the atoll councils in a way that would destroy the characteristics of the decentralization system,” Abbas stated.

"However, I support reducing the number of island councilors based on population ratios."

Meanwhile, former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi spoke against Muizzu's proposal and said the President must be impeached if he works towards it.

Didi said such an amendment to the constitution would be unconstitutional.
