Adhadhu has learnt that the Prosecutor General's (PG) office decided not to press charges against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu before taking his statement in the case involving a threatening phone call to Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa.

A reliable source confirmed that the police had submitted the case to the duty prosecution to decide how to proceed without taking Muizzu's statement.

Only Fiyaz's statement was taken by the police so far and they also took evidence from him to confirm that Muizzu had phoned him.

In a statement last night, the PG office said the investigation had confirmed that Muizzu called Fiyaz and told him that he would "take the strictest legal action" against him, journalists and Adhadhu.

Under the general legal procedure in criminal investigations, police take statements from both parties involved. However, neither the police nor the PG office have said why they did not do so in this case.

On March 15, Adhadhu filed a police complaint after Muizzu phoned and threatened Fiyaz. He received the phone call at 7:04 pm on March 14.

Muizzu contacted Fiyaz to express anger over comments about a family member by a political activist during an opposition rally. In the minute-long phone call, Muizzu threatened strict action against Fiyaz and Adhadhu.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for a full investigation into the matter. The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) also called for an immediate and fair investigation.

The Maldives Media Council (MMC) is conducting a separate investigation. Fiyaz was summoned to the MMC on Monday. The MMC has now requested to meet the President's Office.
