Protest in Addu over electricity problems.
Addu city's electricity problem has worsened with scheduled power cuts announced in several areas of the southernmost city.
The state electric company Fenaka said the existing generators produce 1,000 kW less than required during peak hours.
"On March 24, between 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm, power outages may be required for 1 hour in some areas of Hithadhoo and connected islands," Fenaka said.
The company said planned hours for power cuts will be announced in advance and that they will try to avoid power cuts after 6:00 pm.
Fenaka said earlier that the electricity problem in Addu would be resolved for Ramadan.
On February 17, Fenaka said a 1.8 MW generator set is being delivered under an agreement with State Electric Company (STELCO).
However, the electricity problem has not been resolved, and residents of Addu and their MPs have now started staging protests.
Addu, the second most populous city in the Maldives, has been facing frequent power outages since early last year. The government has given various deadlines to resolve the issue.
