The residents of Addu protested near the airport as Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Najah arrived in the southernmost city.

His flight landed at Gan International Airport at 12:55 am.

The sudden visit came after the city's mayor Ali Nizar announced that the people have to resort to protesting due to the prolonged issue of power cuts.

Some residents told Adhadhu they planned to stage protests on Thursday.

The crowd expressed dissatisfaction with the government as the head of the state-owned electricity company came out of the airport.

Some people were holding placards with anti-government slogans.

"Where is that so-called engine?" the protesters were demanding.

Protesters also shouted that Najah could not answer this question.

Fenaka said earlier that the electricity problem in Addu would be resolved for Ramadan.

On February 17, Fenaka said a 1.8 MW generator set is being delivered under an agreement with State Electric Company (STELCO) while damaged generators were also being fixed.

However, the electricity problem has not been resolved, and residents of Addu and their MPs have begun expressing concern on social media.

Addu, the second most populous city in the Maldives, has been facing frequent power outages since early last year. The government has given various deadlines to resolve the issue.
