The Drivers Association of Maldives has called on all taxi drivers and the public to support and unite against the unfair measures being taken to control the sector.
In a press release, the association said the government’s decision to disregard concerns of taxi drivers and launch a taxi fleet undermines the right of the families of all stakeholders in the sector.
"This is in direct contradiction to the earlier assurance given by the Transport Minister that no such fleet will be introduced without proper consultation and research," the association said.
The drivers association further said the the government taxi fleet would affect the livelihood of drivers, taxi center owners and those who rent out cars.
The association slammed the Transport Ministry for not listening to their concerns and cooperating in a transparent manner.
They called on the government to explain the reason for such a decision.
The government first announced the launch of a taxi line at a ceremony on July 25 last year. However, the government changed its decision on August 4 after taxi drivers protested against it.
However, Transport Minister Ameen told the parliament's Economic Affairs Committee in October that the government has decided to task a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) with providing taxi service.
Last week, an agreement was signed between the Transport Ministry and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to begin a 100 percent electric vehicle (EV) taxi line.
