The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members have hanged anti-government banners in Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo island despite warnings ahead of a planned visit by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

One of the banners hanged near the harbour reads "a bahulool was elected as president of Dhiveheenge Raajje (Maldivians' Maldives)."

The word bahulool became popular after Raa Dhuvaafaru island councillor Mariyam Yashfa performed "Thee Bahuloolekey (You are a deceiver)" song during an MDP rally on December 10, 2024.

Police decided to investigate the matter and summoned Yashfa to appear for questioning on December 18, 2024. However, the summons was later cancelled after criticism.

Bahulool is a Dhivehi word meaning deceiver or cheater.

Meanwhile, the harbour area in Dhidhdhoo has been decorated in the colours of the national flag - red, white and green - to prepare for Muizzu's visit.

However, MDP members have put up banners across the island with slogans reminding the government about the pledges made to the people.

Muizzu's pledges for Dhidhdhoo during the presidential election

  • Build an airport after reclaiming the land
  • Develop roads as requested by the people
  • Establish sports facilities for youth
  • Construct a modern football stadium for international matches
  • Improve the quality of the hospital

A banner which reads "Dhidhdhoo airport in limbo" was displayed as the government has not announced a decision to start the project work.

The two main promises made to Dhidhdhoo, the airport and hospital project, have not been included in the Public Service Infrastructure Projects (PSIP) budget for 2025.

Muizzu will today begin his tour of Haa Alif atoll. He will conclude the tour on Thursday after visiting 10 islands.

Dhidhdhoo council earlier appealed to the islanders to avoid expressing negative sentiments towards the President during his visit.

Police also entered the MDP campaign hall and warned the party activists as they were preparing the anti-government banners.
