President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated President Donald J. Trump on assuming office as the 47th President of the United States of America.
In a letter addressed to Trump, Muizzu highlighted that the Maldives cherishes its diplomatic ties with the USA to advance shared goals of ensuring regional peace and prosperity.
He expressed his wish to work with Trump and his administration to achieve these shared goals for a more secure and safer global environment.
Muizzu noted that this year commemorates 60 years of formal diplomatic ties between the two countries and that this milestone signifies the strength of the partnership between the Maldives and the USA.
He further emphasised that the Maldives values the mutual commitment to expand trade and economic cooperation, advance defence and security cooperation and address global challenges to upholding democratic values, rule of law and human rights.
Muizzu wished Trump a successful term in office as well as good health and wellbeing as he embarks on his official duties.
The US is working to forge closer ties with the Maldives with senior US officials meeting government officials more than 30 times over the past few months since Muizzu assumed office in November 2023.
The US has also increased its aid to the Maldives including the pledge to provide a military aircraft and four maritime patrol vessels. At least USD 12 million has also been provided on two different occasions.
