The national council of the largest opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved a street protest for January 31.

The proposal was made by the chairperson of the national council and no objections were raised against it. This is MDP's first planned street protest since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November 2023.

The party held its "In Defense of the Constitution" rally at the Carnival area in Male' on December 10, 2024. MDP said the street rally on January 31 is also "In Defense of the Constitution."

The national council earlier vowed to help re-elect lawmakers who lose their seats for speaking for the people's rights or for joining MDP amid the recent constitutional amendment.

MDP national council further agreed to carry out protests across the country to change the constitutional amendment and to raise awareness among the people about the consequences of the amendment.

The party decided to invite all registered political parties, civil society organizations and professionals to participate in the activities of the MDP to expand the protests and campaigns all across the country.
