National tennis players Aaraa Aasaal Azim and Nayara Usama Ali made history at the ATF Maldives Open (U16 event), becoming the tournament's first-ever historic winners by claiming medals in both singles and doubles categories.

Aaraa triumphed over Nayara in the U16 singles final with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory, while in the doubles event, the pair of Aaraa and Nayara won against Hong Kong's Aishath Kairin Saizan and Hiu Lam Ella Wong, securing a 6-3, 6-4 win.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for both players, as they became the first Maldivian athletes to win titles at an ATF-sanctioned event held on home soil.

Aaraa expressed immense pride in her singles victory, emphasizing the special significance of competing and winning against international players in her home country.

Nayara also highlighted the importance of this event for their future careers, noting that it will serve as a source of motivation to stay focused and continue improving for upcoming tournaments.

Aaraa, who was named the Maldives Sports Awards 2023 Best Tennis Player, further shared that hosting an ATF-level competition in the Maldives is a game-changer, offering tremendous opportunities for the younger generation of players to learn and grow.

The ATF Maldives Open saw participants from countries such as Kazakhstan, China, India, England, Brazil, and Hong Kong, with many players expressing their appreciation for the Maldives' excellent facilities and the valuable opportunities provided to emerging tennis talent.

The Tennis Association of Maldives (TAM) views hosting international tournaments as a crucial step in advancing the sport in the country and is committed to organizing more events in the future to foster the growth of tennis at all levels.
