Foreign workers have protested near the jetty in front of the President's Office in Male' due to unpaid salaries.

An Adadhu contributor at the scene confirmed that they had been protesting over non-payment of salaries for several months.

Police dispersed the protesters and they were later near the former Dharumavantha School area. Police and Immigration officers are at the scene.

It is unclear which company hired them and the how many months' salaries have not been paid.

Some unverified reports suggest the protesters were from India and Bangladesh. Police have not commented.

There have been previous cases of non-payment of salaries to foreigners working in the Maldives. This has resulted in protests and clashes.

It is a legal offense not to pay salaries to employees, whether they are Maldivians or foreign nationals. However, businesses have rarely been held responsible.
