The Sports Ministry has appointed a political employee as the head of the non-existent Ukulhas Social Centre.

According to the employment chit signed by President's Office Minister Ali Arif, a resident of Alif Alif Ukulhas island was hired as the head of the centre.

Abdulla Arif was appointed as the Assistant Political Director of the Sports Ministry to lead the non-existent Ukulhas Social Centre.

The employment chit stated that he will be paid MVR 15,000 per month as salary and allowances.

Ukulhas council President Ibrahim Shaukath told Adhadhu that the island does not have a social centre and there were no plans to build a centre in the future.

The government is recruiting political employees in various ranks for social centres and other offices in different islands across the country.

In November, the government claimed that 248 employees were sacked to cut costs, but declined to provide their details.

According to various sources, the number of political employees in the government is close to 2000. But the government refuses to disclose the total number.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has failed to fulfil his pledge of keeping the number of political employees below 700.
