President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to grant sentence reductions and pardons to inmates who complete rehabilitation programs.

According to the President's Office, a comprehensive plan was approved on Monday to expand work opportunities for inmates both within and outside prison facilities.

Under the new framework, those who complete rehabilitation programs according to guidelines set by the Homeland Security Ministry and Technology and Maldives Correctional Service will be eligible for sentence reductions and pardons through a structured system.

President Muizzu made the decision after deliberations during a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday following a paper submitted by the Homeland Security Ministry.

He decided to implement a new rehabilitation framework, modifying the system to enhance employment prospects for inmates both inside and outside prisons and integrating the rehabilitation framework with pardons, parole and sentence reduction mechanisms.

The plan also calls for an expansion of community service initiatives with relevant government agencies assigned specific responsibilities with a defined timeline for achieving and monitoring key objectives in order to ensure proper implementation.
