Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Vice President Abdul Salaam and member Thoha Mohamed have resigned as the Parliament prepared to take a vote on their dismissal.

In his resignation letter addressed to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Thoha denied the allegation against him highlighted in a report prepared by the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions.

"I believe that the work undertaken by the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions following baseless allegations prevents me from carrying out my responsibilities with integrity and without influence as required by the Constitution and the Anti-Corruption Commission Act," he said.

Allegations against Salaam

  • Played a leading role in rejecting a case against a former Attorney General despite evidence to prosecute him.
  • Stopping investigations into Binveriyaa housing scheme, prioritizing personal interest and working to prevent damages to a specific political party.
  • Reformed ACC structure to create a forensic section, appointed a close associate as section head and did not work to improve the section.
  • Reformed ACC structure to create a new department, worked to appoint a close associate as department head.
  • Members conclude cases due to pressure and prioritized self-interest when putting matters on agenda.

Allegations against Thoha

  • Issued a compensation of over MVR 200,000 against advice of the commission's legal team.
  • Played a leading role in rejecting a case against a former Attorney General despite evidence to prosecute him.
  • ACC members cannot hold a second job during their term, but his name was mentioned as an attorney on a law firm's website.

The complaints were filed against Salaam and Thoha for allegedly acting in violation of Article 17 (a) and (b) of the ACC Act. They were appointed to the ACC on March 17, 2022.
