President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Fuwad Thowfeek as Maldives' Ambassador to Thailand.
Fuwad ended his term as President of the Elections Commission (EC) on Sunday.
His name was announced for the post of Thai Ambassador at the Parliament sitting Monday morning.
The matter will be referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee before taking a vote on the Parliament floor.
The term of office of a member of EC is five years. Fuwad was appointed to the commission on November 24, 2019.
Muizzu won the mayoral race for Male' city and last year's presidential election while Fuwad served as the President of EC.
He previously served as a member of EC during the first multi-party presidential election in 2008.
Under the Elections Commission (EC) Act, nominees for the commission are proposed by the President and approved by the Parliament.
The ruling party, which controls the Parliament supermajority, recently proposed amendments to the EC Act to allow the President to nominate the President and Vice President of the independent commission. A vote on the amendment bill will be taken today.
EC comprises of five members. Apart from Fuwad, the remaining four members are Dr. Mohamed Zahir, Ali Nashaath, Mohamed Asif and Hassan Zakariyya.
But the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions on Sunday voted to dismiss Zahir, Nashaath and Asif. A vote on their dismissal is expected to take place on the floor today.
