Colombo, Sri Lanka: Abdulla Al Mutairi, the former head coach of the Nepal national football team, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sri Lanka national football team.

Mutairi, who took on the role of interim coach three months ago, had a clear focus: to prepare the Sri Lankan team for their Asian Cup qualifying match against Cambodia. Under his guidance, Sri Lanka secured a place in the third round of qualifiers after defeating Cambodia.

Mutairi also led the team through a set of international friendlies last month, drawing 0-0 against Myanmar and suffering a 2-0 loss in the other match.

Reports indicate that Mutairi’s main objective moving forward will be to prepare a well-rounded team for next year’s SAFF Championship and the upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers.

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) expressed enthusiasm about Mutairi’s appointment, calling it an exciting new phase for Sri Lankan football. The federation noted that his recent successes have generated optimism and strong support from both the public and football administration.

"Al Mutairi is known for his aggressive, attack-minded approach and emphasis on team spirit—qualities that align with Sri Lanka’s football aspirations," stated the FFSL. "His leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus and strategic direction as he prepares the team for next year's South Asian Championship."

This appointment is seen as a key step in Sri Lanka Football’s ongoing efforts to enhance the country’s standing in regional and continental football, according to the FFSL.

Mutairi led Nepal to the final of the 2021 SAFF Championship, marking the country's first-ever appearance in the tournament's final. However, Nepal lost to India in the final, and Mutairi was suspended.
