A suspect has been arrested in connection to death threats issued to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on social media.

Police said Abdulla Miyad, 40, was arrested upon return to Male' last night after staying overseas.

Miyad has threatened to kill and harm President Muizzu, government officials and some members of the public, police said.

Police also accused him of making posts with obscene language on social media and encouraging homosexuality.

He has not yet been summoned to the Criminal Court for a remand hearing, but police said the investigation was ongoing.

A social media account posted death threats to President Muizzu as a comment on the live broadcast of his speech at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York last month.
