The Democrats have expressed concern as the government has so far failed to deliver on the promise to look into the former government's decision to change the Maldives' longstanding policy on the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.

In a statement, the Democrats said the policy change by the former government caused damage to the Maldives and expressed concern as the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had taken no action on the matter.

"The Democrats have already expressed concern and condemned the former government's decision to recognize Mauritius' sovereignty over the Chagos islands and the classified letter to waive its right to go to court on behalf of the Maldives and the vote cast at the United Nations," the party said.

Democrats stressed that President Muizzu's government pledged to review Maldives' decision and that regaining the right to go to court over the Chagos issue is a presidential promise.

The party noted that the British government has now decided to hand over Chagos to Mauritius while the government of President Muizzu remained without taking any action for the past ten months.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) has upheld the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case of the disputed waters between the Maldives and Chagos Islands.

President Muizzu came to power with a pledge to appeal the ITLOS decision within the first 100 days of the government. It has been more than 320 days since he assumed office, but the government has not made any decisions on the matter.
