Senior Advisor for Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party Caroline Vik has arrived in Male' where she was briefed on the security interests of Maldives' diplomatic partners.

Vik met with Deputy Minister of Defense Mizna Ali on September 1. She was accompanied by a three-member team and US Ambassador Hugo Yon.

"Discussions focused on the economic, social and security interests and perspectives of the Maldives and its diplomatic partners," the Ministry of Defense said in a post on X.

According to the website of the Select Committee on CCP, the committee "works on a bipartisan basis to build consensus on the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party and develop a plan of action to defend the American people."

Maldives' most important diplomatic partners are India and China. Maldives has long had its closest ties with India. However, relations with China have strengthened since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu came to power.

In November last year, President Muizzu made his first official visit to China. After completing the visit, he launched strong verbal attacks on India in the presence of Indian Ambassador Munu Mahawar.

Since then, the United States has also been strengthening relations with the Maldives. Senior US government officials from various sectors have visited the country. The country has agreed to provide USD 8 million and USD 4 million on two occasions.

In addition, the United States has also decided to donate four maritime patrol vessels and a military aircraft to the Maldives.
