President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Legal Secretary Abbas Shareef has been appointed to the post of Prosecutor General (PG) today.

A senior official at the PG Office confirmed his appointment to Adhadhu. However, the government has not yet announced his appointment.

But the PG Office told Adhadhu that Abbas was currently at the PG Office to meet with the employees.

In his letter to the Parliament on August 11, President Muizzu proposed Abbas for the post of PG. He was interviewed and approved by the Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

During the vote taken on Wednesday, the 85 MPs present in the Parliament chamber voted in favour of appointing Abbas to the post of PG.

The post of PG became vacant after former PG Hussain Shameem resigned ahead of the August 22 Parliament sitting for his dismissal.

Speaking at the Judiciary Committee's interview, Abbas said he was not instructed by the President or anyone else to run for the post.

He claimed that he submitted the application since he was qualified to be the PG and as it is an opportunity to serve the country.
