The Parliament has today approved Abbas Shareef, the Legal Secretary of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, to the post of Prosecutor General (PG).

In his letter to the Parliament on August 11, President Muizzu proposed Abbas for the post of PG. He was interviewed and approved by the Judiciary Committee yesterday

During the vote taken today, the 85 MPs present in the chamber voted in favour of appointing Abbas to the post of PG.

The post of PG became vacant after former PG Hussain Shameem resigned ahead of the August 22 Parliament sitting for his dismissal.

Speaking at the Judiciary Committee yesterday, Abbas said he was not instructed by the President or anyone else to run for the post.

He claimed that he submitted the application since he was qualified to be the PG and as it is an opportunity to serve the country.
