Maldives Ambassador to China Dr. Fazeel Najeeb has met with the Vice President of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).

The Maldives Embassy in China said in a post on X that the pair discussed possibilities for collaboration in trade and financial matters.

"The two agreed to hold additional meetings to discuss details," the post read.

CNPC is an 82 percent government-owned oil and gas company. This is one of the largest companies in the world. CNPC ranked fourth on the Fortune Global 500 list of highest paid companies in 2022.

Dr. Fazeel Najeeb was appointed as the new Ambassador to China on May 7 by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with the approval of the People's Majlis. Before that, he served as the Ambassador at Large. He was previously the State Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

China is the closest foreign ally of the People's National Congress (PNC) government. The President signed more than 20 agreements during his visit to Beijing in January this year.

Since then, various ministerial delegations have visited China and held discussions with Chinese officials on financial assistance, tourism development and infrastructure projects.
