The Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) has drawn up a concept under a project titled “One Island, One Tower” to develop the tallest building in the country on land to be reclaimed from a lagoon near Male’.
MFMC published information about the project on the gazette but removed the document shortly thereafter. But Adhadhu has obtained a copy of the concept paper.
The building was proposed in accordance with the vision to develop a high-rise tower in the Male’ region, the concept paper stated. The tower was inspired by “iconic” buildings such as the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the paper added.
One of the most famous buildings in the world, the Burj Al Arab was built with the design of a sail. MFMC proposed designing the tower to reflect features of Maldivian culture and history.
The purpose of the project is to develop the Maldives tourism industry and provide luxury services in a building with a “state-of-the-art” design and quality.

Despite repeated calls to MFMC numbers, the company could not be reached for comment about the project as the calls went unanswered.
MFMC is also carrying out two other projects under efforts to diversify the Maldives tourism industry, including an integrated tourism project in Hankede and a project to be carried out with the reclamation of islands in the Gaafaru lagoon.
