A Bangladeshi man admitted to the Laamu Gan Regional Hospital died without a caretaker, Gan MP Yoosuf Nasheed said on Monday.

Speaking during the debate on the amendment bill of the Health Services Act, the ruling party MP said the law must include an authority that would be in charge of patients without a caretaker.

"Honorable Speaker. Just recently, a Bangladeshi man was admitted to Gan Regional Hospital, with no one to feed him and the council and police refusing to be responsible for the man. He died in those circumstances and there was no one to take his body for burial," Nasheed said.

The MP for Gan said there should be a legal mechanism for an authority to take care of such people.

He did not clarify whether the man who died at the hospital was a resident of Gan or was brought to the hospital from another island.

There is a large uninhabited area in Laamu Gan and a lot of foreign workers reside on the island. Among the large number of foreigners working in agriculture on the island, many are known to be without valid documents.
