Maldives should not get caught up in the conflict between "two major powers", India and China, MP Eva Abdulla said today.

She made the remarks during the debate on her resolution calling on the government to establish a sustainable foreign policy.

"We shouldn't avoid talking about this topic. And we shouldn't address this topic in a far-flung manner. We shouldn't get trapped in a conflict when two major countries, two big giants, India and China are in a row," Eva stated.

Eva said that although foreign policy is the prerogative of the President, he should shape it in the interest of the people and it "is not a loose cannon" that can be changed as he wishes.

She described the Maldives as a "geopolitically front line" country and referred to a visit by a Chinese military general in the year 1400 and the interest in Maldives during the European colonial period as proof of this.

Maldives defended its independence by respecting and strengthening relations with other countries, Eva said, adding that Maldives shaped its foreign policy while bearing in mind the dependence on other countries.
