Several current MPs secure MDP Majlis tickets

Several current MPs have secured parliamentary tickets in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary held on Saturday.

They include Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed (Bigey), Kinbidhoo MP Mohamed Nashiz, Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Bilehdhoo MP Ahmed Khaleem, Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abdul Shafeeg, Manadhoo MP Ahmed Haaroon and Villingili MP Saud Hussain.


Meanwhile, three current MPs also faced defeats in Saturday's primary. They are Keyodhoo MP Hussain Gasim, Kelaa MP Ibrahim Shareef and Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam.

Some notable politicians that secured tickets include former Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof's wife Nazra Naseem and Former Managing Director of Road Development Corporation (RDC) Moosa Ali Manik.

Maaz Saleem, who was the running mate of independent candidate Umar Naseer in the 2023 presidential election also secured the MDP ticket for the parliamentary polls.


Former chairperson of MDP Ali Waheed and former State Minister at the Gender Ministry Zifleen Hassan also succeeded in securing tickets.

A total of 93 seats have been announced for the 20th session of the People's Majlis. But MDP is fielding candidates for 86 seats only.

While there are no MDP candidates for seven seats, tickets were awarded in 46 constituencies. Primaries were held for 40 seats.

MDP made history in the 2019 parliamentary elections by winning 65 out of the 87 seats.
