Police used excessive force to arrest a woman on the street last night after subjecting her to verbal abuse.

Video footage circulating on social media shows two officers disrespectfully speaking to the woman before her arrest. One officer was heard telling the woman that God would not answer her prayers.

The woman was apprehended using force, slammed to the ground, and handcuffed behind her back. Police have not explained why she was stopped while standing on the street.

The Maldives Police Service said that the individual has a criminal record related to drugs and was arrested for resisting a search. However, the authorities noted that they would take action if the officers' conduct and communication during the arrest were found to be inappropriate.

"Instructions have been issued to review the conduct and communication of the officers involved. Following this review, action will be taken in accordance with established procedures," the police said.

"The incident occurred when the individual attempted to obstruct officers who stopped her for a search during a routine patrol. If the Professional Standards Command identifies any issues, necessary measures will be taken."

Public concern regarding police conduct and the use of force during arrests remains a major issue. This latest incident has sparked renewed public outcry over the manner in which officers interact with and apprehend citizens.
