Former Vice President Faisal Naseem officially announced today his intention to contest the upcoming Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primary.

Faisal made the announcement during Raajje TV’s "Fashaa Iru" program, where he also revealed Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim as his running mate.

"God willing, I have decided to participate and compete in the upcoming MDP presidential primary for the 2028 presidential election," Faisal stated.

Speaking during the program, Azim explained that he decided to run as Faisal’s running mate because he believes it is vital for an MDP administration to consist of both a President and Vice President from within the party.

"We believe it is very important for an MDP government to have an MDP President and an MDP Vice President. Accordingly, I have accepted VP Faisal’s invitation and am prepared to move forward as his Vice President," Azim said.

Both Faisal and Azim noted during the interview that their decision to enter the presidential primary was made with the "full support" of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

"Yes, we have consulted with many senior party figures on this matter. We spoke with numerous individuals, and particularly with the general public. Most importantly, I must highlight that we consulted with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and we are proceeding with his support. I believe that is a very important factor," Faisal said.

Faisal is the fourth candidate to announce a bid for the MDP presidential primary. Former party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, former party President Abdulla Shahid, and MP Ahmed Shamheed have also declared their intentions to contest the primary.
