The Maldivian government has refuted allegations that the Thilafushi port development project was awarded to a Chinese firm after sidelining India.

The first phase of the project to relocate the Male’ Commercial Port to Thilafushi was awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company in February 2026.

These reports have recently surfaced in Indian media. The Thilafushi port contract was granted to the Chinese firm despite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing readiness to assist in its construction during October 2024.

"This project was awarded in accordance with the laws and procedures for such contracts. The decision was made with a focus on the long-term development of the Maldives. This decision does not reflect a stance against any specific country, nor will it alter existing bilateral relations," a statement read.

Under the first phase of the Thilafushi port development, the Chinese company was contracted for the feasibility study and design work. Additionally, the construction of the port’s quay wall has been assigned to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

Adhadhu understands that both India and the United States expressed concerns following the decision to award the Thilafushi port work to China. Senior officials from the U.S. government later conducted a site visit to the Thilafushi port project area.
