ADK Hospital has successfully performed the Maldives' first-ever robotic-assisted knee replacement surgeries.

The hospital's Managing Director, Ahmed Afaal, stated that the procedures were conducted on September 6 on two female patients aged 64 and 74.

Afaal highlighted that this historic milestone was achieved using the latest "VELYS" Robotic-Assisted Solution from DePuy Synthes, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. He noted that this achievement is a significant part of ADK Hospital’s long-term commitment to modernizing healthcare and integrating advanced technology.

ADK Hospital also holds the record for performing the first-ever knee replacement surgery in the Maldives on January 16, 2002.

"The introduction of robotic-assisted knee replacement services represents a further investment in developing ADK Hospital’s facilities, technology, and human resources," Afaal said.

The surgeries were led by Dr. Shakeel, who was joined by Dr. Govindaraj, an orthopedic surgeon and knee replacement specialist from MGM Healthcare in Chennai.

ADK Hospital clarified that while robotic assistance was utilized, the technology does not replace the surgeon; rather, its primary purpose is to enhance the precision and accuracy of the surgical team's work.

For patients suffering from chronic knee pain and discomfort, VELYS technology facilitates a faster post-operative recovery.

"Key benefits for patients include reduced post-operative pain, the ability to regain mobility sooner, and a shorter overall hospital stay," Afaal added.
