Deputy Minister of Fisheries Mohamed Yaseen has been dismissed from his post following allegations that he defrauded multiple individuals of millions of Rufiyaa by falsely promising to secure flats and land plots through government housing schemes.
Despite Yaseen’s dismissal, police have confirmed that an investigation is underway. However, the Ministry of Fisheries has not officially filed a complaint regarding the matter.
Speaking to Adhadhu, government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) said that the decision to remove Yaseen from office was made after reviewing the allegations once they surfaced in the media.
Adhadhu understands that Yaseen allegedly solicited funds from Fisheries Ministry staff, members of the judiciary, and the general public by claiming he could guarantee housing units and land under government initiatives.
Sources indicate that Yaseen collected between MVR 200,000 and MVR 400,000 per person for promised flats, while some individuals reportedly paid as much as MVR 3 million for land plots.
A source familiar with the matter told Adhadhu that the total amount obtained through these fraudulent activities is estimated to exceed MVR 25 million.
