Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) has achieved a significant milestone in its financial history, with its total asset value reaching USD 1 billion.

As the pioneer of Islamic banking in the Maldives, MIB commenced operations 15 years ago. The bank reached this latest goal after tripling its profits and doubling its customer base over the past three years.

With this achievement and a customer base of 200,000, MIB has now established itself as the second-largest bank in the Maldivian banking sector.

According to statistics from last year, the bank's total assets rose to MVR 16.65 billion, accounting for approximately 16 percent of the total assets within the Maldivian banking system. Furthermore, customer deposits grew from MVR 5.14 billion to MVR 13 billion, marking a substantial 153 percent increase.

The bank attributes this rapid growth to its robust policies and the integration of modern technology.

While operating income reached MVR 897 million, revenue from fees and commissions saw an increase of over 300 percent. Simultaneously, the bank made significant strides in maintaining asset quality, reducing its Non-Performing Asset (NPA) ratio from 4.59 percent to 2.97 percent.

MIB has brought revolutionary changes to the digital banking landscape in the Maldives. Following the introduction of modern services such as instant account opening via eFaas and the 'FaisaViya' platform, more than 90 percent of the bank's customers now utilise digital channels for their banking needs.

In terms of financing, the bank has significantly expanded its corporate financing sector, moving away from its previous primary focus on individual retail customers.

Corporate financing now constitutes 40 percent of MIB’s financing portfolio, encompassing major projects in tourism and infrastructure development. Notably, financing provided to the tourism sector saw a remarkable increase of 385 percent.

MIB’s achievements have also gained international recognition. At last year’s Islamic Finance Forum of South Asia (IFFSA) Awards, the bank received the prestigious "Islamic Bank of the Decade" award, as well as the award for the best digital banking initiative.

The bank stated that its success serves as evidence that the Islamic banking system is both successful and reliable. MIB aims to further expand its digital resources and remain a key partner in the economic development of the Maldives in the future.
