There is a shortage of cement, aggregate and aggregate sand in the Maldivian market.
It is understood that this was caused due to a change in rules in Dubai, the largest exporter of these materials.
A senior official of a company that imports cement told Adhadhu that they only have enough supply for just one week.
"We are not able to get enough from the supplier. We import from Dubai," the official said.
He said orders taken currently cannot be delivered immediately and are expected to be delivered in about two weeks.
Reports said State Trading Organisation (STO), the largest seller for these materials, are also facing a shortage.
Another businessman told Adhadhu that M-Sand is not available in Dubai and that the stock is expected to run out within the next week.
“M-sand is not available now. When we ordered, we were told to load it by March. We will run out of M -and in about five days,” he said.
Due to the shortage, the prices of these materials have also begun to increase. A bag of aggregate sand, which previously sold for MVR 39, is now available for MVR 42. The price of cement has risen from MVR 100 to MVR 103.
