Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has announced his candidacy for the post of Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The post became vacant following Fayyaz Ismail's resignation last week. The former Economic Minister resigned during a meeting of the MDP National Council.
“I would like to ask for the cooperation and support of MDP members in this important work to empower a new generation of party leaders,” Meekail said.
Meekail is one of the four MDP members who were re-elected to the People's Majlis during the parliamentary election in 2024.
He joined the MDP in 2012 after former President Mohamed Nasheed was forced to resign in a coup. He also served as MDP youth wing leader and is a member of the MDP National Council.
