A complaint has been filed at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over two suspicious agreements by the Male' city council to develop the Fish Market.
City Councilor Saif Fathih filed a complaint over the USD 6.1 million agreement signed when President Mohamed Muizzu was mayor and the USD 9.5 million agreement signed when the mayor position became vacant.
Saif said the second agreement was signed by the legal section head Ali Naseer Qasim. He has not been able to explain how USD 3.5 million was added to the first agreement and why the second agreement was signed.
Naseer is also a member of the police board.
Saif has requested to summon him to the council meeting on August 27 and to take a vote on removing him from the position.
He also requested Mayor Adam Azim to submit a detailed report on the differences between the first and second agreements.
At the council meeting held on Wednesday, Azim disclosed some details of the agreements. He said the city council does not know which agreement was valid.
The second agreement, worth about MVR 147 million, was signed before Azim was elected mayor.
At the time, the mayor's position was vacant following Muizzu's victory in the presidential election.
Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh was undertaking the mayor's responsibilities. He is currently an advisor to the Youth Minister.
"As the contract is now, if we can't pay this money, they [contractor] get the whole building. So we can't build a fish market, we can't build a local market," he said.
