Parliament has accepted a privilege issue submitted by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) concerning the Health Ministry’s refusal to facilitate his visit to the Special Needs Center in K. Guraidhoo.
The motion was accepted with the support of 55 members from both the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) and the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The Guraidhoo Special Needs Center, which is under the management of the Ministry of Health, houses over 200 residents. MP Kudoo sent an official request on April 19, 2023, addressed to Health Minister Abdulla Nazim, seeking permission to visit the center for the purpose of assessing its conditions and preparing a report. Nearly two months have passed without a response from the ministry.
"The failure of Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim to respond to the letter sent on April 19, 2025, appears to me as non-compliance with the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act," Kudoo stated in the issue submitted to Parliament.
Under the Act, state institutions are legally obligated to cooperate with members of parliament and provide requested information in a timely manner.
According to statistics published by the Ministry of Social Development in May 2024, the Guraidhoo center accommodates 220 individuals, including 133 men and 87 women. The facility also houses 15 bedridden individuals, 183 people diagnosed with mental illnesses, and 31 elderly residents above the age of 65.
