Rainfall record in Dhiffushi island

The heaviest rainfall in the country's history has been recorded in the past 24 hours in Kaafu Dhiffushi island.

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) said 296.1 mm of rainfall was recorded in Dhiffushi from 8:00 am March 1 to 8:00 am March 2.

The previous record for the heaviest rainfall in 24 hours was on August 12, 2024, in Haa Alif Kelaa island with 231.5 mm of rainfall.

Heavy rains in the past 24 hours caused flooding in large parts of Male'. However, the Met Office has not yet released the details of the rainfall recorded in the capital.

About 40 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters, and the government declared a public holiday today due to the flooding.
