Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has said that rainfall will continue into the weekend and is likely to improve after Saturday.
The Met Office earlier predicted that weather conditions would deteriorate during the first five days of the New Year.
In a statement, the Met Office said widespread rainfall is expected across the Maldives due to a cyclone in the southeast of Sri Lanka.
An official from the Met Office told Adhadhu that continuous rainfall will continue until Saturday and better weather is expected from Tuesday.
Yellow alerts were issued to different parts of the country on Wednesday due to strong winds and rough seas.
The rainfall has caused flooding in Male' with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) working to pump out the flood waters.
