The Maldives National University (MNU) has come under fire for inviting US State Department officials to give a lecture on terrorism.
The event was jointly organized by MNU's Society of Sharia and Law and the US State Department. The event was titled Terrorism Prosecutions - A US Perspective.
Social media users criticized MNU for collaborating with the US which has been the biggest ally in Israel's genocide against the Palestinians.
"Is this to please the US? Are they the best country to teach about terrorism and Islamic Sharia today?" one person wrote.
Some people also questioned whether the MNU was unaware that the US funds Israel's genocide in Gaza.
"Many American students are being arrested for protesting against this [US funding of the Israeli genocide]. However, MNU students are shamelessly carrying out activities with the ally of the genocide," another person wrote.
The current government seeks to maintain closer ties with the United States and this has led to criticism from some members of the public.
