Last month saw the lowest number of tourists in one and half years, according to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism.
Every year, the lowest tourism arrival is recorded in May and June. May 2024 was the month with the lowest number of tourists since September 2022.
In September 2022, 111,986 tourists visited Maldives. According to the Tourism Ministry, 119,875 tourists arrived in May 2024. Tourist arrivals in May 2023 was 120,959.
According to the Tourism Ministry, 895,764 tourists visited Maldives in the first five months of this year. That was 10.2 percent more than the total number of tourists in the first five months of last year.
The number of tourists from India declined by 42 percent in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year, while the number of tourists from China increased by 59 percent.
As of May, 101,202 tourists had arrived from China, while 53,852 had arrived from India. China is the largest source market for Maldives now.
