President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed electing Fonadhoo MP-elect Abdul Raheem as Speaker of the 20th People's Majlis with Dhiggaru MP-elect Ahmed Nazim as Deputy Speaker.
The President proposed the names during a consultation meeting at Muleeage on Wednesday afternoon with heads of government companies and MPs-elect from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem, who was nominated by the President to become Speaker of Parliament, was among the foremost figures in the effort to bring the current administration to power. One of the most influential politicians in the government, Abdul Raheem remains in the post of chief minister as a Special Advisor to the President.
Ahmed Nazim was previously the Deputy Speaker of the 18th People's Majlis (until he lost his seat). He previously represented the Dhiggaru constituency as well. Nazim lost his seat after he was sentenced to 25 years in prison on corruption charges. The Supreme Court later overturned the conviction.

The President also proposed Inguraidhoo MP-elect Ahmed Falah as leader of the PNC's parliamentary group (PG) and Baarah MP-elect Ibrahim Shujau as senior deputy leader, Adhadhu has learned.
Other deputy leaders of the PNC PG proposed by the President were Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq, Vilimale' MP-elect Mohamed Ismail and Hulhudhoo MP-elect Mohamed Shahid (Shaad).
MPs-elect of the new Majlis are due to be sworn in next Tuesday.
