Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has departed for the UK today to attend the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Round Table.
In a press release, the Economic Ministry said Saeed's visit is aimed at seeking the assistance of UK financial sector participants to establish a vibrant financial market in the Maldives.
"The focus of the discussions will be on the development of Maldives International Financial Services Authority and Development Bank," it added.
According to the press release, the visit will help establish formal working relationships with UK financial services companies, modernize the legal framework, and develop a modern and world-class governance, strategy and operations framework for financial sector infrastructure as well as international financial centres.
During his visit, Saeed will meet with UK government officials, the House of Lords and representatives of the financial and professional services industry.
Following his visit to the UK, Saeed is scheduled to visit Washington DC in July with a government business delegation.
