The public has empowered the government with a supermajority of Parliament to amend the Constitution in order to provide services, the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said.
Appearing on the Public Service Media's Raajje Miadhu program, Abdul Raheem, who is also the chief minister of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, said Parliament passing bills proposed by the government was not "rubber stamping" but fulfilling its responsibility.
"The public said, 'serve us even by amending the Constitution.' That's why they gave such a majority," Abdul Raheem said.
If the government is unable to act for the benefit and well-being of the Maldivian people due to a provision in the Constitution, the public has granted the power for the government to pave the way to do so, he said.
The public will see a People's Majlis that works for their benefit and betterment, he said.
Abdul Raheem was one of the most senior leaders of the PNC coalition when the party was in opposition.
During the campaign for the parliamentary elections, the opposition alleged that the government would bring major changes to the Constitution if it secured a clear majority. However, at the time, the government dismissed it as anti-campaigning.
