Candidates who won seats in the 20th People's Majlis in Sunday's parliamentary elections are due to take the oath of office on May 28.

Announcing the date for the swearing-in ceremony at today's sitting of Parliament, Speaker Mohamed Aslam said the Parliament Secretariat has started making preparations.

The final sitting of the current 19th People's Majlis is due to take place on May 13. The five-year term of the outgoing Majlis will end on May 15, Aslam announced.

Parliament sittings are usually held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a majority in the outgoing Parliament, faced defeat in the parliamentary elections. The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) secured a supermajority with 66 PNC candidates winning seats. The number of pro-government MPs-elect exceeds 70 when independent candidates endorsed by the government who won seats are included.

The opposition MDP won 12 seats from the 93-member 20th Majlis.
