Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam has said that peace, for Maldives, includes environmental safety and security.
He was speaking at the 148th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU). The assembly's theme this year is "Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding."
Addressing the assembly, Aslam said the definition of peace for the Maldives includes environmental safety and security.
He noted that although Maldives' contribution to fuel climate change is small, the country continues to face the greatest losses due to climate change.
"We don't want to become climate refugees. We have a culture, a language, an identity. We want to stay in this beautiful Maldives forever," Aslam said.
He also stressed that as a country with more than 500,000 people, losing our homes is not a choice for Maldives.
Aslam highlighted the issue of terrorism, drugs and the low female participation in Parliament and called for an end to the attacks on Palestine.
