Tree Top Hospital has conducted a successful surgery on a 55-year-old woman with cataracts, chronic vision loss and glaucoma.

"The 55-year-old woman who underwent the surgery consulted with Dr. Archana Sharma because she was suffering from chronic vision loss and chronic glaucoma in both eyes. The doctor diagnosed her with chronic angle closure glaucoma in both eyes and advanced glaucoma and senile cataract in the left eye," Tree Top Hospital stated.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Archana Sharma and her team performed the operation, which is a surgical technique used for patients with glaucoma and cataracts. This is a filtration surgery for cataracts and glaucoma.

The operation includes phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation and trabeculectomy.

Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation are surgical treatments for cataracts and trabeculectomy is a treatment for various types of open-angle and normal tension glaucoma using a penetrating filtering surgical procedure, the hospital said.

Despite laser iridotomy and anti-glaucoma medications, the anterior chamber and occludable angles of both eyes drop causing high eye pressure.

Glaucoma is a disease that causes poor vision and high eye pressure, resulting in damage to the nerve that helps with vision. Tree Top Hospital said the surgery was done to slow down the progression of the disease to lower eye pressure and avoid further damage to the nerves and was performed simultaneously with the cataract surgery to improve vision.

"After the surgery, the patient's vision improved and eye pressure dropped. Previously, patients usually had to travel abroad for this surgery, but this surgery can now be done in Tree Top Hospital easily. With such treatment options available from Tree Top, patients can save time and cost and worry less over traveling overseas," the hospital said.

Cataract is a disease that develops slowly over a long time without many symptoms. The patient may not face any pain or redness in the eye.

Although the disease is most common in the elderly, it can also occur in young people and children for various reasons.

Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve. This disease often causes high pressure inside the eye, compressing the nerves and damaging the nerve fibers.

If the condition is not treated properly, it can lead to loss of vision around the eyes and eventually cause loss of direct vision.

It is important to see an ophthalmologist for evaluation if you notice any changes in your vision or if you experience any of the symptoms.

Early diagnosis and treatment of cataracts can help prevent vision loss and improve quality of life.

Tree Top Hospital is the most advanced healthcare hospital in Maldives and provides a wide range of services for eye diseases and disorders.
