The international "PEACE cable" brought to the Maldives with an investment by Ooredoo Maldives was anchored in Kulhudhuffushi and connected to the Ooredoo site on the island yesterday.

Cities, Local Government and Public Works Minister Adam Shareef was the chief guest at the ceremony held to mark the landmark connection.

"Ooredoo Maldives has introduced many innovative services to the country in a competitive environment and is doing a lot of work to develop the country. Thank you very much to Ooreedoo Maldives for this," Adam Shareef said.

Noting that the submarine cable would connect the Maldives to Singapore, Europe and Africa, Ooredoo said the company invested in the PEACE cable to improve the quality and speed of internet services.

The cable would increase 5G capacity, enable innovative services and pave the way for establishing a true digital Maldives, Ooredoo said.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shareef said the landing of the PEACE cable in Kulhudhuffushi was a great honor for the island and for the entire country, adding that it would provide further benefits to the community and open new doors.

It was the first international cable landing on an island outside Hulhumale’.

Oooredoo's Chief Commercial Officer Hussain Niyaz said the name of Kulhudhuffushi City would be included in global maps of submarine cables, which would bring progress to the island and the entire country and further improve Ooredoo's services.

Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif thanked Ooredoo for choosing the island to host the new submarine cable landing station, expressing hope for further benefit and progress for the Maldivian people with Kulhudhuffushi City as a main digital hub.

The Maldives would become a destination that provides digital services to the east and west with the successful connection of the PEACE cable's landing station, Ooredoo said.

It would enable the hosting of data service centers in Kulhudhuffushi as well as the advancement of digital businesses and software development facilities in northern islands, the company said.
