Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam has promised to formulate a plan to provide housing for Parliament employees.
Speaking at a ceremony on Friday night, Aslam said two key concerns were raised during his meetings with Parliament employees.
He listed the concerns as not getting pay raises and not having a housing program dedicated to Parliament employees.
The salaries of Parliament employees have now been raised by an average of 20 percent. Aslam further promised to plan a housing scheme.
"We, the Parliament, is working for it. In my opinion, it must be done by the Parliament, not by any particular government agency, not by the government, the Parliament should be able to arrange it [a housing scheme]," Aslam said.
The Parliament was established in 1932 with the first Constitution of Maldives. However, the legislature began to function fully as an independent power when the current Constitution came into force in 2008.
Before that, the administration of the Parliament was under the President's Office and the Home Ministry.
Aslam added that Parliament employees provide "a service that makes the country proud" and applauded their professionalism.
