India's Lakshadweep cannot be compared to the natural beauty of Maldives, says George Corbin, who contributed to the introduction of tourism to Maldives and Lakshadweep.
Corbin, who was a pioneer in introducing tourism to Maldives 52 years ago in 1972, said the islands of Maldives and the 36 islands of Lakshadweep are beautiful, but the Maldives islands are more perfect.
"Lakshadweep is also beautiful, but Maldives is perfect in every way. Beautiful islands and atolls, diving and people's kindness," said the Italian-born Corbin.
Corbin, who loves to dive, said the underwater scenery in Lakshadweep is not as beautiful as Maldives.
"For diving, in terms of the geographical location of Lakshadweep, Maldives is a lot more beautiful. Lakshadweep is a good place for tourists going to India," he said.
Corbin said he does not believe the Maldives tourism industry will be affected because of Lakshadweep.
On February 16, 1972, Corbin brought an Italian tourist group to the Maldives. Journalists he brought returned home and wrote that "a new paradise has been found.
Corbin also suggested building a resort in Vihamanafushi (Kurumba) and explained how the resort should be built.
The first tourist resort in Lakshadweep was opened in 1974 at Bangaram. Corbin played an important role in the development of the resort and attracting tourists.
"The Tata family invited us to help develop the resort. It was difficult to take tourists to Lakshadweep due to the transportation situation. At that time, tourists were taken by sea from Cochin," Corbin said.
The Bangaram Resort, opened by the India Hotel Corporation Limited, ceased operations in 1982 due to declining business.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep earlier this year and brought it to the world's attention to promote tourism.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also visited Lakshadweep in 1969 and promised to make it a tourist destination.
